I have never been a huge fan of correlation analysis. The reason being is that how things behave in aggregate may not have anything to do with how they would behave in your market for your keywords on your website.
Harmful High Quality Links?

A fairly new website was ranked amazingly quickly on Google.com for a highly competitive keyword. It wasn't on the first page, but ranked about #20 for a keyword that is probably one of the 100 most profitable keywords online (presuming you could get to a #1 ranking above a billion Dollar corporation). The site did a promotion that was particularly well received by bloggers and a few bigger websites in the UK press and at first rankings improved everywhere. Then one day while looking at its rankings using rank checker I saw the site simply fell off the map. It was nowhere. I then jumped into web analytics and saw search traffic was up. What happened was Google took the site as being from the UK, so its rankings went to page 1 in the UK while the site disappeared from the global results. In aggregate we know that more links are better & links from high trusted domains are always worth getting. And yet in the above situation the site was set back by great links. Of course we can set the geographic market inside Google Webmaster Tools to the United States, but how long will it take Google to respond? How many other local signals will be fixed to pull the site out of the UK?

Over time those links will be a net positive for the site, but it still needs to develop more US signals. And beyond those sort of weird things (like links actually hurting your site) the algorithms can look for other signals to push into geotargeting. Things like Twitter mentions, where things are searched for, how language is used on your website, and perhaps even your site's audience composition may influence localization. What is worse about some of these other signals is that they may mirror media coverage. If you get coverage in The Guardian a lot of people from the UK will see it, and so you might get a lot of Tweets mentioning your website that are from the UK as well. In such a way, many of the signals can be self-reinforcing even when incorrect.
Measuring The Wrong Thing

Another area where correlation analysis falls short is when one page ranks based on the criteria earned by another. Such signal bleeding means that if you are looking at things in aggregate you are often analyzing data which is irrelevant.
Sampling Bias

Correlation analysis also has an issue of sampling bias. People tend to stick with defaults until they learn enough to change. Unfortunately most CMS tools are set up in sub-optimal ways. If you look at the top ranked results some of the sub-optimal set ups will be over-represented in the "what works" category simply because most websites are somewhat broken. The web is a fuzz test.

Of course the opposite of the above is also true: some of the best strategies remain hidden in plain sight simply due to sheer numbers of people doing x poorly.
Analyzing Data Pairs Rather Than Individual Signals

Another way signals have blurred is how Google uses page titles in the search results. That generally used to be just the page title. But more recently they started mixing in

using an on-page heading rather than the page title (when they feel the on-page heading is more relevant)

adding link anchor text into the title (in some cases)

adding the homepage page's title at the end of sub-pages (when sub-page page titles are short)

As Google adds more signals & changes how they account signals it makes analyzing what they are doing much harder. You not only need to understand how the signals are used, but how they interact in pairs or groups. When Google uses the H1 heading on a page to display in the search results are they still putting a lot of weight on the page title? Does the weighting on the H1 change depending on if Google is displaying it or not?
Analysis is Still Valuable, but...

I am not saying that analysis is a waste of time, but rather that when you do it lots of do's and don'ts become far less concrete. The fact is that there are always edge cases that disprove any rule of thumb. Rather than looking for general rules one needs to balance things like:

risk vs reward

yield vs effort

focus vs diversity

investment vs opportunity cost

First Mover Advantage

Along the same lines, any given snapshot of search is nowhere near as interesting as understanding historical trends and big shifts. If you are one of the first people to notice something there is far more profit potential than being late to the party. Every easily discernible signal Google creates eventually gets priced close to (or sometimes above) true market value. Whereas if you are one of the first people to highlight a change you will often be called ignorant for doing so. :D

Consensus is the opposite of opportunity.

When you do correlation analysis you are finding out when the market has conformed to what Google trusts & desires. Exact match domains were not well ranked across a wide array of keywords until after Google started putting more weight on them & people realized it. But if there is significant weight on them today & their prices are sky high then knowing that they carry some weight might not be a real profit potential in your market. It might even be a distraction or a dead end. Imagine being the person who bets (literally) a million Dollars that Google will place weight on poker.org only to find out that Google changes their algorithmic approach & weighting, or makes a special exception just for your site (as they can & have done). That day would require some tequila.

As a marketing approach becomes more mainstream then not only do the cost rise, but so does the risk of change. As people complain about domain names (or any other signal or technique) it makes Google more likely to act to curb the trend and/or lower it's weighting & value. To see an extreme version of such, consider that the past year has seen lots of complaints about content farms. A beautiful quote:

Searching Google is now like asking a question in a crowded flea market of hungry, desperate, sleazy salesmen who all claim to have the answer to every question you ask.

And so Google promises action. Don't make Google look stupid!

Volvo Cup � Torino � Sono stati resi noti i calendari della stagione Volvo Cup 2011, evento che racchiude le classi Melges 24, D-One, Laser SB3 e Optimist.

Gli appuntamenti clou della stagione saranno quelli con i vari Campionati Nazionali. Per i Laser SB3 il palcoscenico sar� quello di Alghero (14-16 ottobre). Ben due dei main event, invece, si svolgeranno in quel di Scarlino, dove i Melges 24 lotteranno per il titolo italiano tra l�8 e il 10 aprile, seguiti dai D-One (16-18 settembre).

Imperdibile, visto il successo della prima edizione, disputata a Valencia alcuni mesi fa, la Gold Cup del singolo ad alte prestazioni disegnato da Luca Devoti. Teatro della manifestazione saranno le acque di Riva del Garda, dove la battaglia si infiammer� tra il 28 e il 31 luglio.

The organizers from MobileMonday Italy created another great event this time in the capital city of Rome and got the mobile community together to promote innovation in Italy,� The organizers selected Lettere Caff� which was a great place to get a glimpse of the developers, companies and Startups that are making Bucharest and Romania their headquarters.

We would like to make a special mention to MobileMonday Italy for setting up the events AppCircus@MoMoMilan, AppCircus@MoMoBologna and AppCircus@MoMoRome.

The audience saw the different mobile applications do their demos, with 3 minutes of pitching per app and when the show was coming to an end, the mobile community chose:

A poco pi� di un mese dall�apertura delle iscrizioni, che ricordiamo durer� fino a fine Marzo 2011, arriva la notizia dalla America�s Cup Management dell�iscrizione di un altro team alla 34ma sfida. Si tratta del quinto iscritto ufficiale e cos� come per il quarto non si sa ancora chi sia.

Nei giorni scorsi si sono susseguite sui media internazionali le opinioni di svariati esperti e giornalisti in merito al futuro della coppa, alcune volte le analisi sono state lucide e seppur critiche con una buone dose di realismo, in altri casi traspariva un�inimicizia un po� preconcetta, fa parte del gioco e anche noi abbiamo spesso espresso i nostri pareri.

La verit� � che l�unico termometro affidabile, come diceva Grant Dalton in occasione dell�ultima Louis Vuitton Trophy a Dubai, sar� il numero di iscritti, s4e la coppa avr� meno di 7 sfidanti sar� un flop, se si arriver� a 10-12 allora vorr� dire che la strada intrapresa non � poi cos� sbagliata. Questo come dato preliminare, poi bisogna vedere come gira il macchinario nuovo.

Nel frattempo dall�altra parte del mondo stanno continuando i lavori sul primo AC45 che pochi giorni fa ha visto completato un altro step importante, gli scafi del catamarano sono stati giuntati e ci cominciano ad intravedere delle forme che da quel che si coglie sono piuttosto accattivanti. Mi permetto di fare un�unica osservazione: vivere nell�incertezza di come verr� la prossima coppa � di gran lunga meglio di quando vivevamo nell�incertezza del �quando� e del �se� ci sarebbe stata quella passata. Diciamo che � un po� pi� coinvolgente scrivere di queste cose rispetto alle sentenze dei tribunali.

A qualche giorno di distanza dall�annuncio della sfida tra Moth, Kitesurf e 49er ecco che esce il video di come si sono svolti i fatti, regate corte con lato di bolina e lato di poppa e un pugno di atleti che si sfidano dall�alba al tramonto.

Al di l� di come � andata a finire immaginiamo che questi qui si siano divertiti come dei matti, un�idea semplice resa molto bene anche dalle immagini decisamente spettacolari. Devo dire che siate stati bravi anche voi, nel sondaggio dell�altro giorno avete azzeccato il pronostico della sfida.

In ogni stagione � possibile, per chi va per mare, incontrare una formazione temporalesca contornata da fulmini e tuoni. Questo fenomeno, che tecnicamente viene definito cellula temporalesca, � generato da formazioni nuvolose dette cumulonembi che normalmente hanno origine da cellule convettive � masse di aria calda umida che rapidamente e verticalmente raggiungono gli strati superiori dell�atmosfera � .

Le cellule connettive si muovono su una fascia orizzontale dell�atmosfera che varia da 10 a 50 km e sono direttamente connesse a fenomeni di pioggia, grandine o le scariche dei fulmini. Di solito in estate i temporali hanno maggiore intensit� e pericolosit�, ma anche nelle stagioni intermedie si possono produrre fenomeni particolarmente intensi e pericolosi per la navigazione.

La Classe Star verso l�esclusione dalle classi olimpiche

Come anticipato qualche giorno fa il Council dell�ISAF si � riunito nel week end per dare forma preliminare a quelle che saranno le classi olimpiche dall�edizione dei giochi di Rio 2016. a differenza di altre volte il Council ha dato molto peso al parere dell�Events Commitee della settimana scorsa confermando l�esclusione pi� clamorosa, quella della Classe Star.

Altre novit� riguardano la reintroduzione del catamarano (Tornado o F18) che sar� disciplina mista e dell�abolizione del 470 femminile che diventer� anch�essa disciplina mista. Il doppio femminile che sar� uno skiff (probabilmente il 29er) Ancora al ballottaggio il Kitesurf e il Winsurf mentre sono confermate le altre classi.

Naturalmente non sono mancate le reazioni a questa scelta, che comunque ricordiamo non � definitiva e deve passare altri vagli prima di entrare in vigore; la classe Star tramite un comunicato che potete leggere in inglese direttamente sul sito, sostanzialmente solleva due obiezioni pi� che fondate:

- Escludendo la Star si lasciano a casa quelli che ad oggi sono tutti i maggiori campioni della vela mondiale che abitualmente regalano emozioni in tutte le discipline e classi del pianeta (pensiamo al mitico Torben Grael o al nostro Pietro D�Al� tanto per fare due nomi notissimi).

- Eliminando la Star si esclude l�unica classe, oltre al Finn, in cui possano ad oggi regalare velisti pesanti, cio� pi� di 85 kg, tagliando fuori una buona fetta di potenziali partecipanti.

Aggiungiamo noi che la Classe Star ha fatto la sua comparsa ai Giochi per la prima volta alla X Edizione del 1932 a Los Angeles e da quel momento, tolto lo sfortunato esperimento del Tempest, ha sempre fatto la sua parte regalando spettacolo e grandi campioni al movimento della vela tutta.

Nel 2011 poi la Star compir� proprio 100 anni da quando usc� dalla geniale matita di Francio Sweisguth e potrebbe essere anche la fine di un bellissimo sogno. D�altronde i dictat del CIO sono chiari ed allineati con gli ultimi andamnti della vela nel mondo �rendere lo sport velico pi� mediaticamente appetibile�, una barca con 100 anni di storia evidentemente non rientra nei canoni.

Ieri l�ex campione di Kitesurf Lewis Crathern ha compiuto un�impresa destinata a rimanere negli annali, altra categoria rispetto ai soliti sprinter che conosciamo bene, qui si parla di salti da paura. Nella fattispecie il salto ha comportato il superamento del Brighton Pier che non � altro che una gigante piattaforma sul mare con sopra addirittura un luna park!

Il vento sicuramente non mancava ma le condizione del mare sotto la spiaggia erano davvero impegnative, dopo due ore di attesa per il momento adatto ed un paio di tentativi andati a vuoto il pazzoide ha fatto il salto che vedete nel filmato, ci vuole un bel fegato!

Finalmente anche Google mette in pensione il Site Overlay e presenta In-Page Analytics (per ora in beta su Google Analytics in inglese),� un report che si trova nella content section del Google Analytics Account che permette di leggere in modo ancora pi� chiaro le metriche del sito web.

Il suo utilizzo permette in modo ancora pi� facile e immediato di:

valutare efficacia dei contenuti

capire se l�interfaccia usata � �amica� degli utenti

valutare l�iterazione sito web/utente

Assolutamente da testare e dare in pasto anche ai clienti che potranno ancora di pi� facilmente capire quanto l�analisi dei dati sia una strumento importante per delle efficaci campagne di search engine marketig, e quanto elementi come contenuto interfaccia e grafica possono incidere nelle vendite o nell�acquisizione di nuovi clienti.

Partiti Sabato i 77 scafi della 31ma edizione della Rolex Middle Sea Race sono impegnati sul percorso di 607 miglia intorno alla Sicilia e alle sue isole minori. Come da pronostico davanti a tutti c�� Esimit Europa 2 che ricordiamo ha come skipper Flavio Favini. Meno previsto il distacco di ICAP Leopard, l�altro 100 piedi Canting Keel in regata che all�ultimo aggiornamento di ieri era attardato di un centinaio di miglia.

Al momento il sito della Middle Sea � irraggiungibile, nuovi aggiornamenti non appena sar� di nuovo on line il traker. Ad ogni modo il grosso della flotta sta dirigendo verso Stromboli e per la giornata di oggi � prevista una discreta sventolata da Ponente che potrebbe, Esimit a parte, creare qualche grattacapo a molti equipaggi.

All�ultimo pasaggio valido dello stretto di Messina davanti a tutti in classifica compensata IRC si trovava il piccolo J122 maltese Artie, ben posizionato anche lo Swan 45 Mandolino che ha a bordo Andrea Caracci. Esimit Europa 2 di Igor Simic con Flavio Favini come skipper e Tiziano Nava alla tattica ha vinto il Line Honorus Honours della 31ma edizione della Rolex Middle Sea Race con il tempo di 2 giorni 6 ore 52 minuti e 32 secondi. Il record di Rambler del 2007 resiste quindi per un altro anno.

Esimit Europa precede di circa 5 ore e mezza ICAP Leopard che dopo essere rimasto impantanato in un buco di vento allo stretto di Messina non ha pi� avuto l�occasione di recuperare. Il commento di Favini rende meritatamente prestigio al risultato visto anche che Leopard � barca tutt�altro che lenta.

�Per noi la sfida grande era con Leopard che ha vinto qui il Line Honours lo scorso anno ma che � stato in grado di vincere anche un Fastnet e quindi non � una barca facile da battere.[�] penso che con ariette leggere la nostra barca abbia un leggero vantaggio, se ci fosse stato pi� vento non sappiamo come sarebbe finita.�

Adesso non resta che aspettare come si evolver� la situazione meteo per determinare la classifica in compensato, se il vento rinforzer� probabilmente la barche pi� piccole risaliranno, al contrario con una diminuzione saranno favoriti i pi� grandi e vicini al traguardo. Agli ultimi due passaggi significativi (Favignana e Pantelleria) conduceva il TP52 Lucky mentre � in grande rimonta il Cookson 50 Cantankerous.

UPDATE 11.00 - THE CHASE IS ON

Nearly 48 hours into the Rolex Middle Sea Race, and it�s clear that the record set in 2007 by George David�s Rambler � 47h, 55m, 3s � will remain intact for at least another year.

The current race leader, Esimit Europa 2 (SLO), passed Pantelleria at 06.00 this morning, currently nearing Lampedusa, and is expected to finish in the early evening tonight. Approximately 45 nautical miles astern is the maxi ICAP Leopard (GBR), which rounded Pantelleria at 09.30 doing 12.8 knots and is desperately trying to narrow the gap. But the lighter northwesterly breeze � around 10-15 knots � was more suited to the Slovenian maxi.

Mike Slade, owner of Leopard, emailed in, �What a merry dance Esimit Europa is leading us. Since she got the jump on us in the Strait (of Messina) and extended across the top of Sicily, we have been waiting for the wind gods to shine on us. Sadly, all too late we pick up 15 knots of breeze as we come past Pantelleria and we have just touched 20 knots of boat speed as we head down for Lampedusa. Can we pull back a 40-mile lead in the remaining 200 miles? A big ask! All good on board, we have just had garlic sausage for breakfast (remind me to sack the chef). Our current heading is 150 degrees and wind speed is 19 knots with TWA 140 carrying our big A1 kite.�

Further back, at the island of Favignana, is the mini-maxi Alegre. Will Best, navigator onboard emailed last night: �It has been a really tricky race so far, not all of our pre-race strategy has quite gone to plan. We were caught out on the wrong side of a cloud leading up to Messina which is where we lost touch with the 100 footers, and since then we�ve been focusing on staying ahead of the forever closing pack of E1 and the TP52�s who are having a great race.

�Spirits onboard are all good, at the moment we are just getting through the lee of Alicudi just a few miles ahead of E1 and Pace. We haven�t anything to loose now by trimming a few corners and hope this light southerly gets us to Trapani in time for the front that�s forecast for our fast finish.�

John Brinkers, watch leader on the Volvo 70, E1 (RUS) also reported in last night: �So here we are drifting along the north coast of Sicily. Its 11pm Sunday night and we're drifting along in less than two knots of wind just off Isole Eolie.

�The other watch is trying to coax the light asymmetric along, making sure it stays filled. It�s a pretty mundane job when all you've got to look forward to is 1.5 knots of boatspeed; a far cry from this morning when we were blasting along at 22 knots. The forecast is for the breeze to eventually fill in from the west, so we are trying to get there as fast as we can.

Just after 10.00 this morning, a further update came in from Brinkers, �Well, what a night. We were totally becalmed a few times and then eventually got going but the regular crew were complaining about a lack of speed and I must say the boat felt totally wrong when driving it.

�Eventually this morning we had a good look over the side and saw the cause of the problem, a fisherman's buoy wrapped around the rudder with a stack of net hanging off it. Our Slovenian crew Tosh volunteered to hang off a halyard, and with the upwind sails sheeted on in 15 knots, and swing keel fully canted out the wrong way (to leeward) the boat laid on its side in irons. It allowed Tosh to 'walk' down to the rudder and clear the debris. What a hero!

�With him back on board and us back on the pace we are once again in pursuit of Alegre, about 10miles ahead. It�s a shame having had that buoy hanging off the rudder, we're started having speed problem at nightfall, so it was there all night!�

At the Stromboli checkpoint, it was going to the wire in Class Three. Sonke Stein�s J/133, Juno was leading, but only just, four minutes ahead of Jaru and Argo from Malta and Italy respectively, who are inseparable on corrected time.

Stein said, �Although Juno is registered in Hamburg, she is based in Malta. This is my first Rolex Middle Sea Race with the boat, but personally this is my ninth race. The crew is mainly Maltese and has done the race many times. We hope to win, but the competition is very strong, we are looking forward to more exciting conditions ahead and above all to enjoy quality time with good friends.�

Nisida (GBR), racing in Class Two, reported in 50 miles west of Stromboli. The 52-foot Bill Lee-designed light displacement yacht is crewed by members of the London Corinthian Sailing Club who travel all over world to compete in races, which have included nine Rolex Fastnet Races.

Crew member Hillary Cook emailed, �North of Sicily it feels like we have sailed into a different climate zone. Gone from deck is the stash of sun cream and water bottles, to be replaced by thermals, oilskins and pleas for cups of hot tea. Porridge for breakfast this morning was very welcome after a challenging night, battling heavy rain and a wind which refused to make up its mind whether it was still southeasterly or the promised westerly, and at times settled for being zero.

�After we resorted to hoisting our spinnaker it finally did decide on being the westerly and we are now beating our way towards the half way point, hoping for some enjoyable surfing conditions once we make it round Favignana. But as ever with this race, it's great fun!'

The 45-footer Comrade (RUS) turned back at Stromboli, retiring at 07.30 with rudder problems and was heading to Messina to effect repairs; at 09.00, the Dufour 40, Bonito (ITA) retired and was also heading to Messina.

George David's Rambler (USA) established the current Course Record of 47 hours, 55 minutes, and 3 seconds in 2007.?To break this record, a Class 1 leader would have to finish on Monday morning before 11.35am.

The final prize giving is at 12.00pm on Saturday, 30 October at the Mediterranean Conference Center in Valletta.

Facebook is, at the moment, the most important social network in the world. Over 500 million people connect to one another in the "Social Network." And, with the introduction of the Open Graph, we are interacting with our Facebook connections on our favorite websites where our social graph and the corresponding activity of Likes, interaction, and commentary become the centerpiece for social curation and more importantly, our focused attention. We are putting our social network to work and we are learning how to share, discover, and collaborate in public.

Brands, regardless of size and focus, are converging on Facebook where the idea of connecting with customers and prospects represents a potential boon for both earning relevance in a new domain as well as expanding overall reach. Facebook is a sparkplug for word of mouth and when engaged, contributes to the end of business as usual and the beginning of social commerce. If fact, the top 10 brands on Facebook today host over 100 million "Likes" on Facebook.

With that said ... By This Time Next Year

By this time next year, you as a brand or as a brand representative, will spend more time and resources on Facebook than you will on Twitter.

Allow me to clarify this statement as it's easy to misread. My sentiment is merely a reflection of the maturation of the social web and the commitment and attention required to cultivate communities, inspire advocacy, and foster engagement. Facebook and Twitter are unique in their design and their culture and each offer distinguishing opportunities for businesses. As such, they demand a dedicated focus, strategy, and approach.

Twitter is important and essential to learning, engaging, and cultivating customer communities. I believe that Twitter is your window to relevance, both understanding how to identify and earn it.

Facebook, as both a network and a platform, is unlocking new and important connections between people, brands, content, and data. The technical and creative aspects of what Facebook is capable of facilitating on behalf of your business and the people who define your markets, requires indoctrination. And, once we explore the culture and technical advantages of Facebook Connect, Likes, and the scope and possibilities of the open graph, we get an idea of the deepening emphasis required to transform Facebook from a "Fan Page" to a bona fide brand page, creating nothing less than a social epicenter for business.

If Twitter is your window to relevance, Facebook is your focal point for the social web.

Nothing goes without saying here. It is also important for you to invest in learning about where, when, and how your social consumer engages with peers as they most likely connect in other networks beyond Facebook and Twitter. It was after all, the inspiration for the Conversation Prism. Facebook is just one, albeit pivotal, pillar in your socialized business strategy. The State of The Facebook

With over 500 million active users, Facebook is by far one of the most important networks in the world. 5o% of those active users log on to Facebook in any given day. And in total, people spend over 700 billion minutes per month posting, sharing, Liking, commenting, poking, playing games, and interacting with one another as well as the content and applications that define the pervasive social ecosystem.

The average user is connected to 80 community pages, groups and events and creates 90 pieces of content (social objects) each month. If you follow Zuckerberg's Law, then we will double the amount of content we share every year. When combined, the numbers are staggering. More than 30 billion social objects (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) are shared each month. Facebook is a vortex for content.

Everyday individuals on Facebook maintain a social graph of 130 people, which is in line with Robin Dunbar's theory (Dunbar's number) of the maximum number of relationships we can effectively manage. However, with suggested friends, I believe that number will push us to expand our networks from relationships (strong ties) to relations (focused, weak, and temporary ties). I call this Social Graph Theory. And much like Zuckerberg's Law, Social Graph Theory suggests that the size of our network will grow, but more importantly, become much more complex, yet focused. We will maintain relationships, but also expand into a thinner form of relations that include interest graphs, nicheworks (contextual networks) and temporary connections. What's important for businesses to realize, is that individuals now maintain peer networks that resemble engaged audiences where interests are the axis of conversational rotation.

Brands are increasingly globalizing and Facebook scales with the reach that they need. Currently over 70 translations are available and more than 70% of all Facebook denizens reside outside of the United States. And more than one million developers and entrepreneurs from more than 180 countries support Facebook as a "platform" with greater than one million websites integrating Facebook sharing, liking and visualized social graph features into content discovery and consumption. So, what does that mean? Integrate Facebook functionality into your online properties (in addition to other relevant social presences of course). Two-thirds of comScore's U.S. Top 100 websites and half of comScore's Global Top 100 websites have integrated with Facebook.

And what of mobile?

Smart phones are the new sub-tablet so to speak. There are as many active users accessing Facebook on their mobile device as there are active users of Twitter. And that's a powerful statement. Today 150 million people access Facebook actively and they're twice as active on Facebook than non-mobile users. May I Have Your Intention Please?

Many brands underestimate Facebook and what's truly required to attract and captivate the social consumer. In my research, I find that a significant number of brands focus their efforts primarily on Twitter, treating Facebook as an afterthought. Rather than engage in each community with purpose and dedication, examples are abundant where companies are simply syndicating tweets to Facebook rather than updating each network individually. When people reply on Facebook, representatives are usually unaware as they're mostly monitoring Twitter responses rather than Facebook. In these cases, Facebook becomes a graveyard for tweets instead of a community where likes are earned and conversations are fostered. After all, how do we expect to trigger the social effect without investing time and attention in the people who define the very social graphs we're hoping to engage and activate?

Facebook success is defined by our investment of time, resources, energy and creativity. In other words, we get out of it what we put into it. In Facebook, it's not just about who we're connected to, it's about those we're not. What started as "Fans" has evolved to "Likes" and in that simple shift in phraseology comes something quite profound. "Fans" implies a hierarchical relationships where brands publish at will to a community that feels a bit more like a traditional audience. "Likes" begets a linear form of relationships where we earn the endorsement of a social consumer, but in order to foster a community, we have to continue to do so. This introduces a peer-to-peer (P2P) dynamic where rather than program our Facebook activity from a top-down perspective, we now have to consider an active participatory role in earning Likes, attention, and hopefully advocacy much more frequently than we may have anticipated initially.

Likes become a form of social currency and contribute to the overall social capital earned by a brand within Facebook.

In February 2010, market research firm Chadwick Martin Bailey along with iModerate Research Technologies, surveyed over 1,500 individuals online as well as conducted one-on-one discussions to contextualize social media behavior. Their research shows us that social commerce and quite specifically, F-commerce (Facebook Commerce) is bursting at the seams.

Since actions speak louder than words, the study sought to answer the question of whether or not engagement actually leads to purchases. The answer is yes. An impressive 51% of Facebook fans and 67% of Twitter followers indicated that they are more likely to buy since connecting online.

Success begins with a plan, which serves as a roadmap to reach customers and those who influence them. On the road to success, it is wise to refer to the map routinely to ensure that we stay on course. Doing so, reminds us why we're here in the first place.

The roles of the social consumer are distinct and the reasons for connecting with a brand are equally diversified. It's our job to cater to each segment to earn their Likes and attention now and over time.

On Facebook, existing customers topped the list with 49%. Following with 42%, consumers felt compelled to show support for the brand. In third with 40%, individuals admitted that they hoped to receive discounts and promotions.

Other stats worth mentioning, 27% and 26% of respondents stated that they would like to be among the first to know information about the brand and also to gain access to exclusive content respectively. And, 17% claimed that they were referred to the page by someone that they knew, which already demonstrates word of mouth at work.

Facebook is changing the way we think about business, customers and community and as such, there's much to learn. Everything begins at the beginning and together, we will earn relevance and expand business opportunities in a new social marketplace one Like at a time.

What is critical is not just the data collected, but also what is added to those data in interpreting them via conceptual models in the analyst's store of knowledge."
In other words, how you think is more important than what you know. This is one of the big take-aways from Philip Tetlock's wonderful Expert Political Judgment and you would be forgiven if you thought I was just touting his 2005 book again.

No, the quote above is from a 1979(!) INSCOM sponsored study into cognitive processes in intelligence analysis (called, amazingly enough, Cognitive Processes In Intelligence Analysis: A Descriptive Model And Review Of The Literature. It, and its companion piece, Human Processes In Intelligence Analysis: Phase 1 Overview are available through DTIC or you can download them here and here from Scribd. I wish I could say that I found them on my own but they come to me courtesy of Dalene Duvenage, who teaches intel analysis in South Africa, and the always useful IAFIE mailing list).

While much of the content in these two papers is probably more easily accessed by way of Dick Heuer's Psychology of Intelligence Analysis, there are some new gems here. One of my favorites is the reason for the studies.

According to Dr. Joseph Zeidner, Chief Psychologist for the US Army in 1979, and MG William Rolya, the Commander of INSCOM at that time, "Intelligence collection systems have proliferated over the past several years, increasing in complexity and in volume of output. However, there has been no corresponding improvement in the ability of intelligence personnel to analyze this flood of data." Sound familiar?

Another interesting tidbit comes from the Human Processes paper which lays out the personality attributes of the ideal analyst. These include:

Is a technologist

Is either a specialist or a generalist but not both

Is an "information entrepreneur"

Is comfortable with changing roles

Can communicate (oral and written)

Is a detective

Is imaginative

Is self-starting

Has a profession (Intelligence analysis)

These criteria seem to strike a chord as well. All in all, both papers are worth a look, if only because they seem to prove that the more things change, the more they stay the same...

I think we can all agree that one of the biggest problems with social media is how much time it takes to implement a successful campaign. That time that you are spending strategizing, building personas, designing, implementing and analyzing is costing you and your company a ton of money � especially if you can�t justify if it is even doing anything.

It really astonishes me how much people focus on quantitative metrics. All they want to see is that they have 30,000 followers on Twitter. Regardless if they are 90% spam bots and terrible leads. But which would you rather have: those 30,000 followers or a 10% reduction in customer support costs because you were able to solve an extra 200 support tickets over Twitter. Those qualitative metrics are the key to measuring ROI on Twitter.

So how do we determine what qualitative metrics to focus on? That�s actually a pretty loaded question and it�s going to depend on what your objectives are with your social media campaign. To be honest, that�s actually where most strategies shoot themselves in the foot. They don�t spend enough time debating what they need to accomplish in social media and what is possible based on how their audience is participating in that particular social space.

That�s a very important point to pay attention to. You need to understand exactly how your audience is using a particular social network and determine what their mindset is while using it. Are they using it for personal interest or have you found that they routinely discuss purchasing decisions and talk about your company or competitors?

The next thing you need to do if you�ve determined that it is the right social network for you to participate in, is decide what the right use of that social network is. Is it really a good idea to turn your Fan Page into a support channel?

Once you�ve determined what your strategy is, it�s time to figure out what qualitative metric to associate with it. Here are a few examples you should consider (and think about framing other KPIs around in a similar format):

Number of people in a specific location who follow you on Twitter

Reduction in support costs

Number of product improvement suggestions from FAcebook fans

Increase in product reviews & ratings

Increase in share of voice (brand awareness)

Rolex Middle Sea Race � Malta � Saranno ottantatre gli equipaggi che a partire da sabato daranno vita alla trentunesima edizione della Rolex Middle Sea Race che, con le sue 606 miglia, � senza dubbio la grande classica dell�altura mediterranea. Tra questi non mancheranno il vincitore assoluto dell�ultima edizione, Alegre, il MiniMaxi di Andres Soriano, il dominatore dello stesso appuntamento in tempo compensato, ICAP Leopard, il cento piedi di Mike Slade, il recentissimmo vincitore della Barcolana, Esimit Europa 2 di Igor Simcic e il VOR 70 Ericsson 1 di Vladimir Prosikhin. In regata ci sar� anche Steinlagher 2, il ketch vincitore della Volvo Ocean Race del 1989-90.

L�arrivo di molti dei protagonisti a Marsamxett Harbour � stato ritardato dagli effetti di una bassa pressione che ha investito il mare a sud della Sicilia con raffiche di vento prossime ai 50 nodi. Nel caso di Esimit Europa 2 e Wild Joe non c�� stata altra scelta che avanzare verso Malta, visto che ormai si trovavano gi� in mezzo al Canale di Sicilia. Per entrambi non sono mancati i problemi. Il trenta metri sloveno � stato colpito da un fulmine che ha messo fuori uso parte dell�elettronica di bordo a partire dall�anemometro, mentre il velocissimo Reichel-Pugh 60 di Marton Jozsa ha rotto sia la randa che il genoa.

Ci sar� quindi grande lavoro da svolgere per il team di Flavio Favini e per il navigatore Silvio Arrivabene che, in soli tre giorni, dovranno rimettere in sesto i sistemi di bordo, indispensabili per poter lanciare l�assalto al primato di Rambler che nel 2007, in condizioni estreme, ha completato il percorso in 47 ore, 55 minuti e 3 secondi.

Da tenere sotto stretta sorveglianza, in quanto papabili per il successo finale in tempo compensato, scafi come i Coockson 50 Calypso IV di Piero Paniccia e Cantankerous, a bordo del quale saranno impegnati talenti del calibro di Gabriele Bruni e Alberto Leghissa.

Al momento buona parte degli iscritti � ormeggiata al Grand Harbour Marina da dove, domani, avr� inizio una delle prove di avvicinamento alla prova di altura. Molto nutrita � la flotta dei J-Boats, considerati, specie il J-133, tra gli scafi da battere in relazione al successo assoluto in tempo compensato.

Tra coloro che arrivano da pi� lontano va citato Bryon Ehrhart. Statunitense di Chicago con alle spalle alcune prove di grande altura, come la Newport-Bermuda del 2006, la Transpac del 2007 e la Rolex Fastnet race del 2009, sar� in regata sul temibile TP52 Lucky.

Saad uses a great blend of original fonts, imagery, interesting graphs, originality, and even a little humor.� I don't think there's any argument that a visual resume like this is far more engaging and memorable than a standard resume.�

D-One Gold Cup � Valencia � E� l�argentino Agust�n Zabalua il primo vincitore della Magic Marine BetPro D-One Gold Cup, conclusasi ieri a Valencia in un finale thrilling. La quinta prova, disputata con vento da 130� tra i 6 e gli 8 nodi, � stata vinta dallo stesso Zabalua, che ha ottenuto la terza vittoria parziale su cinque prove. Al secondo posto il romano Andrea Gancia e al terzo l�ungherese Zsombor Berecz, olimpico della classe Laser. A questo punto Zabalua aveva 4 punti di vantaggio sull�ungherese e 6 sul croato Ivan Gaspic, ma c�era ancora tempo per disputare la sesta e ultima prova che, con il suo punteggio doppio, poteva ancora condizionare la classifica finale. La flotta � partita con un vento sui 6 nodi da 115� che per� � andato via via calando, fino a scomparire del tutto nel corso della seconda bolina. L�ottimo Comitato di Regata del Real Club Nautico de Valencia ha opportunamente deciso di annullare la prova riportando in breve tempo la flotta dei trenta D-One a terra, dove era gi� pronta un�enorme paella ad attenere i timonieri.

Agust�n Zabalua ha vinto con un ottimo parziale 4-2-1-1-1, con 4 punti di vantaggio sull�ungherese Berecz (1-6-2-3-3) e 6 sul croato Gaspic (3-1-5-2-8), primo dei sei finnisti olimpici che hanno preso parte all�evento. Al quarto posto l�inglese Ed Wright, recente vincitore della Finn Gold Cup, con parziali 6-3-6-4-12. Quinto e migliore della nutrita flotta italiana � stato Alberto Ferrari (Associazione Velica Bracciano) con parziali 2-11-7-12-5. Sesto posto per un�altro atleta romano, Andrea Gancia (11-20-8-5-2). Il titolo master (over 50 anni) � andato all�italiano Guido Falciola (LNI Mandello Lario).

Luca Devoti ha cos� commentato l�evento: �Sono stati tre giorni eccezionali e sono molto soddisfatto della flotta e dell�evento. Il sistema di equalizzazione dei pesi ha dimostrato di funzioanre, consentendo a tutti i migliori, tra 72 e 95 kg di peso, di poter competere per le posizioni di testa. Adesso continueremo la diffusione della classe, partendo gi� da 5 associazioni nazionali e dalla classe internazionale, costituitasi proprio qui a Valencia con la presidenza di Philippe Rogge. Il Real Club Nautico de Valencia � stato perfetto, con grande qualit� in acqua e a terra. La prossima edizione della D-One Gold Cup si disputer� a Riva del Garda alla fine del luglio 2011�.

Quando era nato tre anni fa il team britannico di Sir Keith Mills aveva lo specifico scopo di riportare il Regno Unito a livelli competitivi nel panorama della Coppa America, il percorso e l�impegno sono stati notevoli nonostante le varie incertezze che regnavano nell�ambiente prima che la disputa tra Alinghi ed Oracle si risolvesse, oggi per� l�annuncio definitivo: per la 34th America�s Cup Team Origin getta la spugna.

Lo fa in un comunicato pubblicato sul sito ufficiale in cui si dicie che alla luce del nuovo formato, le date, i costi e la nuova formula di barche, la sfida ha perso di interesse commerciale ed organizzativo per Team Ogigin e per questo la squadra britannica non sar� della partita al momento delle iscrizioni dal 1 Novembre.

Tra gli indizia fortemente sospettati di aver condizionato questa scelta c�� anche, come avevamo detto, la concomitanza della Coppa con i Giochi Olimpici di Londra 2012 in cui due degli uomini di punta (Bena Ainslie e Ian Percy) aspirano all�oro rispettivamente nel Finn e nella Star. Team Origin sta valutano la possibilit� di mantenere il team compatto partecipando ad altri eventi di grande respiro internazionale.

TEAMORIGIN, the yacht racing team established by Sir Keith Mills, and skippered by triple Olympic Gold Medallist, Ben Ainslie, announced today that it will not be challenging for the next America�s Cup scheduled for 2013.

The team, which was set up in 2007, has been waiting for three years to enter the America�s Cup, which was delayed when the US team, BMW ORACLE Racing, took the Swiss team, Alinghi, through the US courts. The US team won the court battle and won the 33rd America�s Cup Match to become the America�s Cup Defender in February this year. The new US Defender has recently announced the format for the next America�s Cup, including the rules and type of boat to be raced. TEAMORIGIN has also been briefed by the Defender and has made numerous comments on both the regatta rules and class rule.

Having now had a chance to analyse the race format, the proposed fixed wing catamaran boat, the timetable, rules and costs, Sir Keith has concluded that the 34th America�s Cup is neither viable commercially, nor an attractive sporting contest for TEAMORIGIN. Therefore he has decided that the team will not submit a challenge when the challenge period opens on 1 November.

Sir Keith Mills, TEAMORIGIN Team Principal, �After three years of waiting in the wings to enter a British team in the America�s Cup I am bitterly disappointed that we will not be competing. However, the format and timetable decided by the Defender, BMW/Oracle, is simply not viable for TEAMORIGIN. We have assembled an outstanding team, led by Grant Simmer and Ben Ainslie, and I am personally very sorry that they won�t now get the chance to race for a British team in the next America�s Cup�.

Over the next couple of months TEAMORIGIN will be considering whether it will compete in other yachting events over the next few years.

Concluso il Campionato Europeo Farr40 nella acque di Porto Rotondo, la buona notizia � la conferma dell�ottimo stato di forma di Nerone di Massimo Mezzaroma che dopo la vittoria del mondiale si laurea campione continentale.

Dopo ben 10 prove disputate la barca portata da Antonio Sodo Migliori con Vasco Vascotto alla tattica si � imposto con tre vittorie e mai un piazzamento nella seconda met� della classifica, 26 punti totali contro i 32 del secondo classificato, il granitico Barking Mad di Jim Richardson, terzo � invece il tedesco Struntje Light di Wolfgang Schaefer.

�Una grande gioia, per noi, che dedichiamo questa vittoria a Massimo (Mezzaroma), che non ha potuto essere oggi qui a Porto Rotondo, e ad Alberto (Signorini). A un certo punto del Consiglio Federale il presidente FIV Carlo Emilio Croce ha detto: �Mettiamo subito sul sito il testo dei principi del nuovo Statuto, tanto tra mezzora qualcuno telefoner� a Colivicchi�.

La notizia � che la FIV ha fatto prima di Colivicchi.

B�, io sono contento. Ero dal commercialista, ho avuto una giornataccia, non avrei proprio potuto seguire il Consiglio, tantomeno �anticiparlo� come fatto giocosamente altre volte in passato. Si sono sbrigati e hanno fatto prima di me. Io ero in banca e poi bloccato nel traffico, e loro han fatto in fretta e furia per battermi sul tempo. Ma � una cosa straordinaria! Hanno "comunicato"! Capite? Praticamente ho fatto pi� oggi per la (ancora) Nuova FIV che nei 24 mesi precedenti. E senza neanche saperlo.

Scherzi (fino a un certo punto) a parte, il Consiglio Federale, il �governo� FIV, tornava a riunirsi da lungo tempo. A Genova, oggi. Una riunione attesa ed evocata, soprattutto per l�esordio delle bozze sulla riforma dello Statuto seguite al lavoro della Commissione omonima. L�iter � noto: la Commissione elabora una serie di proposte che seguono i principi informatori indicati dal presidente federale Carlo Croce all�inizio del suo mandato, quindi i consiglieri esaminano il testo con le proposte, ed eventualmente il Consiglio approva un testo definitivo sulle modifiche statutarie, da portare all�approvazione (o meno) dell�Assemblea sovrana, la riunione di tutte le societ� affiliate (i circoli) prevista a inizio 2011. Oggi, insomma, gran giorno dell�atteso esordio del primo testo in Consiglio.

Naturalmente nessuno sente il bisogno di comunicare niente a nessuno, tantomeno la comunicazione FIV comunica qualcosa sull�argomento (una cosina da niente, no?) alla periferia, Zone e Circoli. Come al solito viene (in)caricato (a salve) dell�incombenza il website federale, con una laconica news che sembra scritta da Eugenio Montale. Eccola:

�Si sono svolti oggi presso la sede Fiv a Genova i lavori del 421� Consiglio Federale. Molti gli argomenti trattati ma l'attenzione maggiore si � sicuramente concentrata sull'attesa presentazione da parte del Presidente onorario Carlo Rolandi dei lavori svolti dall'apposita Commissione per la revisione dello statuto federale. Il testo integrale dei principi informatori dello statuto federale elaborati dalla commissione si trova in allegato.�

Pi� questa frase conclusiva, tutta da interpretare:

�Eventuali osservazioni e proposte potranno essere inviate al Coordinatore Federale nei prossimi 15 giorni, per essere sottoposte all'esame della Commissione per la revisione dello Statuto Federale, che rielaborer� un nuovo testo da presentare all'esame del prossimo Consiglio Federale.�

�L�attenzione maggiore� � durata in realt� ben poco: il tempo di leggere le due pagine e di darsi appuntamento tra due settimane. Da chi dovrebbero arrivare le eventuali osservazioni e ancor pi� le proposte, entro 15 giorni? Di sicuro dai consiglieri federali. E forse da Zone, Circoli affiliati, singoli tesserati? Voi come lo interpretate? Io voglio farlo estensivamente: tutti voi siete chiamati a intervenire. Osservazioni e proposte al Consiglio Federale, ma entro 15 giorni. Perch� poi la Commissione rielaborer� un nuovo testo e lo sottoporr� all�esame del prossimo Consiglio.

Quindi datevi (diamoci) da fare.

Certo non si tratta di osservare o proporre sul testo di articoli di Statuto, ma solo su �principi informatori�, molti dei quali gi� noti. Ma � qualcosa.

Noi promettiamo di dare il massimo contributo a questa fase: per prima cosa � essenziale visto che non lo fa chi di dovere � comunicando e condividendo al massimo questa informazione e lo stringato documento (2 paginette piuttosto ermetiche) frutto del lavoro della supercommissione per lo Statuto. E poi lanciando idee, osservazioni, facendo interviste e sondaggi. Insomma comunicando e facendo comunicare. Cio� il nostro mestiere.

A proposito: nel comunicato di Montale sul Consiglio (gi� finito? Che rapidit�) si parla anche di �molti argomenti trattati�. Non vi lascia un po� di curiosit�?

Eccovi accontentati.

�MOLTI GLI ARGOMENTI TRATTATI�

Come tutti i Consigli anche questo prende le mosse dall�approvazione del verbale dell�ultima riunione, in questo caso risalente all�8 luglio, seguita dalle varie delibere d'urgenza e delle �comunicazioni� da parte del Presidente e del Coordinatore Federale.

Quindi le proposte di delibera dei Settori. Oggi erano queste. 1) Approvazione del bilancio consuntivo del primo semestre 2010, e del Codice di comportamento etico-sportivo (mica male conoscerlo, no? Ma se lo tengono nel cassetto)

Importante (e forse anche per questo rimasta avvolta nel mistero) la definizione della rappresentanza FIV all�Annual Conferenze dell�ISAF di novembre.

In tema di organizzazione territoriale sono state recepite le risultanze della Commissione Affiliazione e Tesseramento. In tema di Promozione Immagine Comunicazione (si fa sempre per dire), si � parlato della partecipazione FIV al Salone Nautico di Genova.

Per quanto riguarda il vasto settore dell�Attivit� Agonistica e Squadre Federali: sono stati approvati i piani speciali di preparazione olimpica per gli equipaggi equipaggio Gabrio Zandon�-Pietro Zucchetti e Giulia Conti-Giovanna Micol, definito lo staff tecnico 2011 (non sarebbe male una presentazione ad-hoc, magari al salone chiss�: questi ragazzi che �si fanno il mazzo� con professionalit� e dedizione alla divisa, per pochi soldi, meritano almeno un po� di visibilit�). Resta invece in bilico l�individuazione della terza regata di selezione olimpica.

Programmazione Attivit� Sportiva Nazionale: decisa una integrazione del contributo al Comitato Organizzatore del CICO 2010 (meritatissimo), e inserite nel Calendario le manifestazioni internazionali ISAF programmate in Italia.

In tema di Formazione dei Quadri Tecnici, ratificate le nomine degli Istruttori per i corsi di II livello, e stabilita la composizione delle Commissioni d'esame per il passaggio di categoria di Ufficiale di Regata Nazionale con specializzazione in Comitato delle Proteste e Comitato di Regata. Nominati anche i presidenti delle commissioni degli esami per Ufficiali di Regata Zonali.

Il consigliere di presidenza Pino Barbieri ha poi relazionato il Consiglio sulla composizione dei Gruppi A-B-CC e del Team Under 19 per la stagione 2011.

A presto con l�analisi dei principi per le proposte di modifica allo Statuto. Con un primo avviso: sono interessanti. Da approfondire. Un software da far "girare". Scenari da immaginare. E soprattutto: principi da leggere trasformati in articoli di Statuto. La strada non sar� breve.

Il 22 luglio Alessandro Di Benedetto ha concluso il suo giro intono al mondo a vela sulla barca pi� piccola mai usata da un navigatore, di soli 6,5 metri. Il precedente record risaliva addirittura al 1969 quando Robin Knox Johnston concluse la Glonde Globe con la sua barca Suhaili, di poco pi� di nove metri e settanta.

Oltre all�aspetto� puramente velico, questa impresa evidenzia come sia possibile, previa un�adeguata preparazione, circumnavigare il Mondo anche su piccoli scafi. Molti scettici avevano previsto il fallimento dell�avventura di Alessandro, ma la sua tenacia e forza di volont� hanno prevalso sia sulle condizioni ambientali che sulla sfiducia dei pi�.

Si � disputato questo fine settimana ad Alassio il 1� Campionato Nazionale della classe D-One, ultima tappa del circuito Volvo Cup 2010 di questa nuova deriva voluta e ideata da Luca Devoti. Ad aggiudicarsi il titolo � l�italo-argentino Agustin Zabalu� (1-2-5-1), secondo l�azzurro olimpico del 49er Pietro Sibello (3-1-1-2), terzi il Finnista Giorgio Poggi (4-5-2-4), di nove punti.

Grazie all�innovativo regolamento D-One, che mira a tenere aperto il risultato fino alla fine, a rivelarsi decisiva � stata l�ultima prova. Prima di questa Pietro Sibello era in testa con cinque punti, seguito da Zabalu� con otto. Proprio nell�ultima prova l�italo-argentina � riuscito a rimontare dal 10� posto fino a vincere la prova, davanti all�azzurro.

Quarto in classifica Paolo Rossi (5-7-dns-3), e quinto Andrea Magni (11-6-4-6). La top ten del primo campionato D-One � completata dal sesto posto di Andrea Giammarini, dal settimo di Andrea Gancia, dall�ottavo di Alberto Ferrari, dal nono di Riccardo Pontremoli e dal decimo di Giovanni Tricarico.

La classifica Master � vinta da Andrea Magni, davanti a Giovanni Tricarico, e al terzo posto Guido Falciola.

Il circuito Volvo Cup 2010 D-One ha visto in gara oltre quaranta timonieri da tutta Italia, nelle tappe di Scarlino, Bracciano, Numana e Torbole. Si conferma al vertice Zabalu�, davanti ad Andrea Magni e all�inglese Tim Garvin, che ha perso il primato a causa dell�undicesimo posto di Alassio.

Simplicity. It is a lovely ancient spiritual tradition that has seen a recent resurgence in popularity.� As we try to make sense of our erratic economy and the accompanying financial anxiety, it is natural to leap to a less risky lifestyle extreme � stop spending, scale back, live lean.

If you are a regular reader of Zen Habits, you are probably intrigued by the idea of simplifying. In fact, you may have even given up many material things and actively live a very simple life. People who have adopted this level of� simplicity, especially in the land of consumerism, are incredibly inspiring and fascinating.

But let�s be real here. In spite of embracing the concept of simplicity, most people really love their stuff, and they love acquiring more stuff. Like our attitudes about a healthy diet, our feelings about material things are complicated. We know what�s good for us, but we just don�t want to give up what we like. Our stuff makes us feel good.

Is it possible to live a simple life and still love stuff? How much letting go of stuff really counts toward simplifying anyway?

Living simply and detaching from material things will make you happier. There is real research and lots of anecdotal evidence to support the truth of this. But is it possible that some material things can add to our happiness, sense of contentment and joy in life? If so, how do you go about deciding what�s good stuff and what�s bad?

Perhaps the deciding factor is motivation. Do the things that you own or wish to buy support your ego, or do they enliven your soul? Some material things can afford you a sense of warmth, coziness, beauty, fond memories, or comfort. There are other things that offer only that fleeting rush of acquisition.

If you infuse mindfulness into your ideas and actions around material things, you can create a gentle balance between loving stuff and living simply.

Here are some thoughts that might be useful.

1. Look around your house now.

Walk from room to room. Do you see things that you never use and don�t really care about? Why not give them away or sell them? Clear physical and psychic space by removing the �dead wood� in your environment. Someone else might�really�need these things.

2. Examine why you are hanging on to something.

Is it truly useful or meaningful, or does it feed your ego in some way? Are you holding on to it just to impress others or to make yourself feel better or more important?

3. Look at how you spend your time.

Do you have things you own for hobbies that you never pursue? Do you have a kitchen full of gadgets but you rarely cook? If you truly think you will come back to a hobby or activity, box things up and put them out of sight until you do. Be realistic about how much time you have to use your extraneous stuff.

4. Are you in a career that is thing-focused?

Decorators, car dealers, retailers and others involved in creating, buying, selling and marketing merchandise, can have a hard time detaching from material things because they are always surrounded by the newest and best. There is beauty and art in many things, but consider this: you don�t have to own them all to appreciate them. Eckhart Tolle once suggested to Oprah Winfrey that she not buy everything she likes or wants � just savor it for the moment in the store.

5. Consider experiences rather than things.

On the whole, experiential purchases provide far more pleasure than material purchases. The memory of experiences improves with time, but material purchases are harder to think about abstractly. Experiences also encourage social relationships which provide long-lasting happiness. If you are itching to spend, spend on a great experience with someone you enjoy.

6. When you think about your things or want to purchase something new, consider these parameters:

It brings beauty into your life and stirs your soul.

It supports a passion or hobby.

It helps bring family and friends together in a creative, meaningful way.

It educates and enlightens.

It makes life profoundly simpler so that you can pursue more meaningful things.

It helps someone who is sick or incapacitated.

It is useful and necessary for day-to-day life.

It�s part of a meaningful tradition or a reminder of a special event.

7. You will know you are buying mindlessly if you:

Buy on a whim.

Buy to impress others.

Buy because you feel you deserve it.

Buy when you can�t afford it.

Buy just to update something that still works or looks fine.

Buy because someone else has it and you want it too.

Buy because the advertisement seduced you.

Buy because you are bored.

It�s purchased because buying soothes you.

It is possible to balance a simpler life with owning and acquiring material things. You can enjoy stuff without living the life of an aesthetic. The exact balance you create is a matter of personal preference. But realize there is a diminishing point of return with accumulation and materialism that undermines authentic joy and fulfillment in life.

Apply mindful purging to your current lifestyle and belongings, as well as thoughtful consideration to your future purchases. Carefully examine your motivations for keeping possessions or buying new things. Once you allow things to serve your soul, rather than you being a slave to your things, your life will evolve into an artful harmony between what you have and who you are.
